“The Playlist” by Experienced New England Disc Jockey

The Pros: Why Fill Out A List?maine-party-disc-jockey-playlist-by-dj-danny-debruin.jpg

A DJ generally fills out a playlist to avoid repetition and to gauge progress during the course of an evening. The additional advantages include:

1) By writing notes next to a group of songs, a DJ can refine "sets" over the course of several evenings. This allows the DJ to go back to older playlists whenever she or he needs creative inspiration via strong sets from the past;

2) Whenever a DJ has a "rough night," she or he can evaluate the weak sets and/or songs for potential elimination or refinement;

3) After several weeks, a DJ can spot whether she or he is repeating the same songs in the same order every night (helping him or her to avoid becoming "predictable");

4) In some clubs, DJ's are required to make announcements. The playlist is a notepad and can also help the DJ keep track of requests, CD's and/or records that need to be replaced, and equipment notes;

5) New DJ's can get senior DJ's and/or managers to evaluate their playlist (thus assisting in the training process).

The Cons

1) The playlist can become a tedious distraction;

2) Many DJ's fail to keep an accurate account of every song that was played – thus rendering those playlists unreliable for future guidance;

3) A DJ's playlist is like a chef's secret recipe. It's the DJ's "sound." A DJ risks losing his or her "secret recipe" whenever his or her playlist is exposed to a competing DJ. This is why "trainspotting" is a major issue among DJ's.

What Should A Playlist Include?

A playlist should include the date and DJ name at the top, the song title (and if needed, artist name), and the time the song was played. It should also include notes next to successful and unsuccessful sets. For example, if a song clears the dance floor and you notice that your past notes (from previous nights) shows that this has occurred several times, then it's probably time to eliminate that song. The playlist may also have a summary describing the DJ's opinion of the night's level of success. For example, comments such as "good night, but a late crowd," or "this night was affected by the holiday" will help the DJ when looking for guidance from past nights.

Finally, the playlist is more common in corporate clubs. In some of those cases, a DJ is required to have a manager sign his or her playlist at the end of the evening. While this level of corporate control is understandable, it can also stifle the creative process – and take the fun out of being a DJ.  A DJ is an artist, not a secretary. It makes little sense to compel a DJ to fill out a playlist against his or her will (particularly when that DJ – in most cases – is the only person that will ever read it).

Maine Wedding DJ offers “buyer beware” advice when searching for DJ entertainment

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)
Monday, December 24th, 2007

Maine Wedding DJ Danny DeBruin offers the following advice to the event planners who are searching for that "quality disc jockey" on their special day…

While searching for the perfect entertainment on your special occasion, you may have noticed that DJ's will charge anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars.

Many of you may be asking yourself, "Why is there such a large difference in the prices of DJ's?  Don't they just play music?"

The answer is a simple NO.

The Disc Jockey Industry has made great strides and improvements since 1999 in the quality and services they provide.  Associations, Magazines, DJ Newspapers, Seminars and Conventions have formed to better educate DJ's of the importance of what they do and to elevate their quality and service.

Unfortunately, this is NOT true for all DJ's.  Some (for what ever reason) refuse to attend these educational opportunities and contine to provide sub-par to mediocre disc jockey service.  These inexperienced DJ exhibitionists send thousands of guests home dissappointed year after year after year.

If you hire an inexperienced or sub standard (average) disc jockey service, it can have a profound effect on the success of your event.  For example: You've rented the hall until 12:00am but because of poor entertainment, your guests leave by 10:00pm.  Not only did you pay too much for your entertainment, but also paid two extra hours for the hall, bar service, and wait staff that won't be used all because your disc jockey couldn't entertain your guests.  End Result = Money wasted and disappointed guests.

Have you ever heard this?  "I could hire my friend to DJ and save some money".

Yes, you can but unless your friend is a professional DJ, it will be a disaster the same as if you did your own dental work.  A DJ is a professional that knows through experience which songs to play when, and how to professionally interact with the crowd while keeping the dance floor filled with an atmosphere that is conducive to celebration.  These disc jockey characteristics come from years of training and experience in leading events with an extensive knowledge of music and equipment.  There are thousands of people who thought they could just hire a friend to play CD's at their wedding or special event; later they wish they could go back in time and hire a professional.

Don't learn the hard way.  Choose a professional DJ from DeBruin Entertainment!

Wedding Reception Entertainment… Likely to “make or break” your big day!

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)
Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Maine Wedding Disc Jockey, Danny DeBruin believes that choosing your reception entertainment is one of the most important decisions you will make in the wedding planning process.  If the entertainment is lousy you are likely to loose guests early in your reception. You'll get to meet a lot of wedding industry people who are generally nice, outgoing, and personable. Of course the big debate is Disc Jockey or Band. That's always one of the hard decisions a couple must make. The biggest advantage a wedding DJ has over a band is cost. There are some lousy bands out there and many awesome bands too, but  bands can cost a lot of money. I saw an excellent band at a function that charged $4000 for the 8 member group.  A good wedding disc jockey is cheaper than bands, and they dynamically work your wedding crowd for 5 hours.

Maine Music Mixing DJ’s presnts, “The art of beat mixing”

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)
Friday, November 16th, 2007

Maine beat mixing disc jockey, Danny DeBruin believes the art of "music mixing"  is the major difference between the new school DJ VS the old school dj.

Since the early-90's, it's been much easier for new DJ's to learn how to beat mix.  This is because most of today's dance tracks have long intros, breaks, and outros with perfectly-synched computer generated beats (i.e., no live drummer). In addition, the increasing availability of DJ equipment at lower prices has made it easier for newcomers to get started.

Maine DJ asks, “Have you gotten what you paid for in DJ entertainment?”

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)
Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Disc Jockey rates vary based on talent, experience, emcee ability, service, coordination, equipment needed, music knowledge, mixing ability and personality.

Rates for the DJ industry vary greatly, ranging from $350.00 to over $5,000.00 with an average of $1,200.00 for a 4 hour booking. The best price is not always the best deal, especially if you are planning a wedding. As a matter of fact, surveys conclude that nearly 100% of brides would have spent more money on their entertainment and made it their #1 priority in hindsight.

A full-service disc jockey company will normally invest 12 to 20 hours to your special event but it may appear that you are only paying for "4 hours". Consultations, music purchasing & editing, preparation, set-up and tear-down, education and other business related endeavors add up to the overall success of your special occasion.

Booking a DJ isn’t something that we do everyday and we have all been to an event where a poor disc jockey has ruined the atmosphere of the party.  The entertainment industry is now flooded with inexperienced DJ exhibitionists, who roll in two speakers with an Ipod and call themselves a ”Professional DJ”.  To help protect you from these culprits, DeBruin Entertainment offers a free personal consultation to ensure we are the right service for your entertainment needs.  We understand how important your Wedding Day is and we will do all we can to make it PERFECT.

Maine Wedding DJ encourages attendance at Disc Jockey conventions

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Throughout his eight years as a professional entertainer, Maine Wedding DJ Danny DeBruin has benefited from networking within the the DJ industry.

By visiting the convention exhibit halls, mobile disc jockeys have the unique opportunity to see, hear, experience, and discuss the offerings of hundreds of vendors, all in one place.  Trade shows also provide an opportunity for you to tell vendors your needs, opinions, and experiences.  Your input can result in products and services that better meet the needs of our profession.

Training seminars and workshops offer wonderful learning opportunities.  Vendor-sponsored parties provide a refreshing social outlet free of selling pressures.  Special parties and social events are a great way to meet and speak with peers under casual, enjoyable conditions.

Although the life of a disc jockey serves for many as an independent profession, it is critical to know that you can always learn from others within the DJ industry.  Showing up for these fun and action-packed events is essential for DJ's who want to keep on top of the rapid changes that continually shape the the scope of our business.
